Fall
- If there is a summer reading requirement, make sure all is completed. The schools that require them make it a major assignment for the first quarter/trimester of school. Not doing well can dramatically affect the final grade.
- Continue your participation in school activities/community involvement.
- You know the school environment. Take a huge leap in accepting responsibility and wise choices this year academically and socially.
- Set goals for yourself; you might have to make new friends who have similar goals as yours in order to stay focused on school.
- Take the PSAT, a practice test for the SAT and take it seriously so that you can use to begin the college search process.
- Visit the college career center.
- Review your grades on your transcript with your counselor and set goals to improve GPA this year.
- Understand your class rank which can affect the kind of college that will admit you.
- Attend a local or Regional College Career Fair.
- Complete the task list on Collegeboard to explore careers.
- Add your school activities for a resume senior year.
Spring
- Plan next year’s courses to reflect your interests, school progress, and emerging career plans.
- Consider taking SAT Subject tests in your major courses if you are considering selective colleges and if you are getting A’s and B’s in classes.
- Challenge yourself with Honors or Advanced Placement courses, if you are recommended.
- Advanced Placement courses are high school courses that you can get college credit after taking the AP test and receive a 3, 4 or 5.
- Attend an AP Potential day and evening Programs if you are recommended.
- Create a College Board account and review the questions that you answered incorrectly to improve SAT scores.
- Review your credits to make sure that you are on task to graduate on time.
- Make sure that you are maintaining good relationships with your teachers who you will need to ask for recommendations in your senior year.
- Attendance is important to college admissions and to future employers.
Summer
- Consider summer enrichment programs on college campuses.
- Volunteer work is something that you can do in areas where you are considering a future career.
- Summer reading can improve your vocabulary.
- Consider a part-time job.
- If you don’t have an email create one. Colleges will use it to contact you in the fall.
- Consider an SAT or PSAT prep program at your school or local community college.
