In my career as an educator, I have had the opportunity to advise over 1,000 students and parents in the areas of self-esteem, motivation, accountability and college/career planning. Although my job can be taxing, I love every minute of it!
In addition, having the experience of raising teenagers I know the frustrations, inadequacies and joys (yes, all of those feelings at the same time) of parenting young adults. They can be a trip with no luggage!
Let me guess your experience:
- I’m so busy working and managing everyone’s schedule–I haven’t really kept up with this kid. Am I a good parent?
- Have I done everything right to guide them out into the world to become a productive member of society or will I get stuck taking care of an adult?
- I don’t know much of anything about the college process. I’m going to mess this up for them and they’ll go to a rotten college if they can even go at all.
Well at least that’s the drama we can create in our minds. Yes, you are a good parent. No, he won’t live in your basement forever. No, she won’t be going to a crappy college. Feel better now?
My desire is to ease that pressure a bit by sharing nuggets, wisdom and stories that I’ve accumulated over the years so that you can best prepare your student to navigate the multiple transitions of young adulthood.
I look forward to taking this journey with you!
